Description:

Star Wars: The Clone Wars took fans on an amazing ride of digital graphics storytelling. This gave way to great character-building and fantastic new Star Wars ship designs. One of them was the V-19 Torrent Starfighter which was designed for the series by artist Thang Le. Thang Le took inspiration from the real-world Prop Fighter, with its folding wings, the F4U Corsair. This fighter sits on a flight deck with all three of its wings in an upward position. As the fighter is piloted away from its landing position, all three wings drop down to be below the Pilots line of sight, with the center vertical stabilizer being pointed straight down. Upon the TV series and Movie’s success, the Hasbro Toy company made a toy of the V-19 for its 1/18 figures to fit into. For some reason, toy companies always mis-shape their toys to look toy-ish. Then they place figures into them that are way too large to be for the actual scale of the ship they are fitting them into. In the mid-1990s toy companies emerged that began making their toys more accurate in shape to the original designs used in movies and TV series. The digital age had arrived. Such is the case for Hasbro. For many of their Star Wars toys, they have created them now using the digital files that were used for the ships in both the TV series and movies. The V-19 Torrent is one of them. It is highly accurate to what we viewed onscreen, though it did have some toy-like challenges to be changed. The Hasbro V-19 is actually in 1/24 scale. It would need a pilot in that scale, and artist Matt Meyer found a digitally created Captain Rex Keychain figure in 1/24 scale that he repurposed to be the pilot of this V-19. Matt completely disassembled the toy and removed anything that was too toy-like to be presented as a museum-quality piece. Modifying some of the parts, he created a new fitment for the canopy, then he created mounting points to be on either the front or the back of the middle stabilizer’s engine. The intake and exit covers both are removable to be able to mount this using any 1/4-20 threaded mounting system. It may be photographed and filmed, or displayed from either its front side or its back side with this option. Matt also removed the many protruding screw lugs that are there for the toy to be assembled with screws. These are simply not needed on a museum-quality piece. Being that this was to be displayed in flight mode, Matt appropriately removed the landing great struts and covered the two landing gear bays. The molded plastic details on the engines, which show pipes and other inner details, were removed and new details were created that look more realistic. A new, reduced-size cockpit was created to be in actual 1/24 scale. It would then fit the Captain Rex pilot figure correctly. It is painted in a base white, and like the T-65 X-Wings it is in scale with, it also has red markings. From the stripes on Captain Rex’s V-19, it appears it is indicated as being Red 5. The wing symbol is the Republic insignia used on all of their ships and fighters. Matt physically scored this model with damage and heavily weathered it to look very utilized. The weathering was done by using black charcoal, black and rust paints, as well as chalk to obtain that battle-torn look that makes this great V-19 as realistic to the original digital model as possible. It is mounted using an adjustable Panavise mount via a 1/4-20 thread. The Panavise is connected to a wooden base. It is truly beautiful, and it is likely that this is the only V-19 ever made from this source to be made accurate to the original digital model. It may truly be the only 1/24 V-19 to be made into an accurate museum piece. This piece displays beautifully and attracts much attention from everyone who views it, and it is absolutely rare, if not the only one to exist in this way. Keywords: Collectible; Ref: BD1831
