Description:

Extremely Rare! Salvador Dali (1904 - 1989) "Romeo & Juliet Act I Scene I" Color Lithograph. Original mixed media color lithograph printed on heavy rag paper. First State. First Printing. Published by Rizzoli Editions in 1975 in Milan Italy. The artist illustrates Scene I of Act I: he opens the curtain on the city of Verona. While the servants of the Montecchio family start another scuffle in the streets, on the background of the city it is possible to glimpse the palace of Capuleti's lit up for the party. The father of Juliet is indeed organizing a party that should favour his plans regarding the marriage between his daughter and the young Paris. It is precisely in that building that a little later Romeo and Juliet would have met and fall in love. The artwork is taken from the slipcase containing the ten illustrations that Salvador Dalì realized for Rizzoli Editore in 1975, for the tragedy “Romeo and Juliet ? by Shakespeare. Salvador Dal? (1904-1989) is among the most versatile and prolific artists of the 20th century and the most famous Surrealist. Though chiefly remembered for his painterly output, in the course of his long career he successfully turned to sculpture, printmaking, fashion, advertising, writing, and, perhaps most famously, film making in his collaborations with Luis Buñuel and Alfred Hitchcock. Dal? was renowned for his flamboyant personality and role of mischievous provocateur as much as for his undeniable technical virtuosity. In his early use of organic morphology, his work bears the stamp of fellow Spaniards Pablo Picasso and Joan Miró. His paintings also evince a fascination for Classical and Renaissance art, clearly visible through his hyper-realistic style and religious symbolism of his later work.
