Description:

Lucien Lautrec (1909-1991) "Calique Pres Montsegur" Geometric Study Black and Blue Pencil on Paper. From 1925 to 1927 Lucien Lautrec was a student at the School of Fine Arts in Nimes and then from 1930 to 1933 attended the fresco workshop of Ducos de La Haille at the National School of Fine Arts in Paris. In the years 1930/36, he became friends with the painters Jean Le Moal, Jean Bazaine, Alfred Manessier, with whom he participated in 1941 in the exhibition of the twenty young painters of the French tradition. From 1936, he began to exhibit. His painting at this period remains figurative. After the war, Lucien Lautrec's work gradually evolves towards a non-figurative approach where the rhythm of the light takes on a dynamic and unique dimension. In 1948, he founded with Michel Carrade and Robert Lapoujade the Popular Academy of Plastic Arts in Paris and headed the National Directorate of Popular Academies of the National Federation of Popular Academies. This Federation contributes in the years 1950-1960 to the training of a large number of artists, both in Paris and in the provinces. From 1955 to 1979, Lautrec directed the Atelier populaire d'artsastiques in the building where his own workshop is located, at 10 rue Tournefort - near rue Mouffetard and place de la Contrescarpe - in the 5th arrondissement of Paris. Many important artists of the time were members of the steering committee of this workshop. The Academy was chaired by Jean Bazaine. The rich - very technical - teaching provided by Lautrec himself, surrounded by rare collaborators including a sculptor and a Bauhaus historian, forced his students to do a long and rigorous work on the line and the point before allowing them to approach color. and to express themselves more freely with wet techniques, on supports to the preparation of which they were also initiated. In 1966, the pupils were also invited to approach other modes of expression, in particular the sculpture by the folding of metal sheets and the cartoon by the scratching of film. A plaque is now affixed to the building which indicates that Lucien Lautrec lived and practiced there. But the urban and human environment of the workshop unfortunately evolved, the bazaar (to the left of the entrance) in which the students could stock up on papers and other supplies that have disappeared, and the old bistro (to the right) in which they could order coffees-calva having given way to a modern restaurant. "Lucien Lautrec will not stop painting until the end of his life. The titles of his works remind us that he constantly refers to moments, sensations, memories he kept of places, of natural spaces : Bee morning, Montségur, From a garden of Hammamet, Port landscape, Light wind, Forest city and so on.
