Description:

Finnish Mosin Nagant Model 28 Civil Guard 7.62x54R Rifle. This nice original Finnish war horse is a Model 28 Civil Guard rifle with a matching bolt and a Sig-sourced barrel with an excellent bore. In the 1920's the Finnish Army and Civil Guard decided that their M91 Mosin Nagant service rifle was in need of updates and improvements, so each branch began independently to design an improved version. The Finnish Army was the first to complete the task and adopted their design, the Model 27, as their new service rifle. Not to be outdone by their Army rivals, the Civil Guard acquired one of the Army's new Model 27s and went to work further improving the design. The Civil Guard eventually came up with an acceptable design and named it the Model 28. Sako was contracted for building the Model 28s, and used mostly Sig-sourced barrels during production with very few of their own barrels used occasionally. The Model 28 featured a shortened barrel from the M91 with the depth and pitch of the rifling changed, the trigger was improved, and the stock was changed. The rear sight was re-graduated as well to 850 meters and the Model 28 used a new U-shaped blade instead of the Army's V-shaped blade. A new front sight was added that had protective ears on it like the Army's Model 27, but had the centering screw in front of the sight blade instead behind it like the M27. The Model 28 went on to serve the Civil Guard well thru 3 wars and beyond, eventually being used for training new recruits in the 1950's. Finnish Model 28 Mosins are quite scarce because of these factors and low production numbers to start with, and are very collectible today in the U.S. This example original 17148 serial number and is a very attractive all-original rifle. It has a nice original 1-piece stock complete with the original but faint "SYT" in an oval stamp in the right side finger groove which indicates Finnish Civil Guard inspection team approval and acceptance. All of the stock hardware is correct, original, and tight to the gun. The original blue finish on the on the metal parts has turned a blue-brown patina but still looks good and is consistent with a combat used rifle. The Sig produced barrel has a nice clear "SY" stamp on the top ahead of the receiver for Finnish Civil Guard property. The previous serial number on the right side of the barrel has been lined out by Sako when the rifle was built, and it was given a new serial number which appears on the left side of the barrel and on the bolt flat ahead of the bolt handle. The fact that the bolt is matching is exceptionally good, which is not often the case. The left side of near the end of the barrel it is marked by Marathon Products Inc Wethersfield CT.
