Description:

Bengt Orup (Sweden, 1916-1996) Johansfors Sweden Art Glass Sculpture. Limited edition modernist abstract sculpture by Swedish artist Bengt Orup for Johansfors Glass. Bengt Orup was born in Lindesberg, central Sweden on 13th October 1916. He was a Swedish artist, glass designer and a pioneer of Swedish post-war modernism. In 1932, at the age of 16, Orup moved to Stockholm to attend the Kungsholmen grammar school. After a year, Orup left the grammar school to study at Otte Sköld art school in Stockholm (1933-38). In 1938 Orup continued his studies in Paris at the Académie de la Grande Chaumiere and Académie Colarossi. While in Paris, in 1938, he participated in an exhibition at the Institute Tessin. The Institute Tessin is also known as the Centre Cultural Suédois - it is a museum in Paris dedicated to the history of Franco-Swedish artistic exchanges dating back to the seventeenth century Orup married Teddi Aviator in 1939 and in 1940 they returned to Sweden. They settled in Gamlehus, Domsten, just north of Helsingborg - a place which was to have great importance to both for the rest of their lives. The couple had two children, Peter b.1947 and a Charlotte b.1949 In 1946 Orup returned to Paris (and St. Paul de Vence) for a year, where he first experimented with pure, geometric shapes. Art Concert was an Avant-garde group of artists formed in Paris in 1929, championing a geometrical abstract art closely related to the aesthetics of Neo-plasticism. During the late 40's and early 50's, Orup created a series of l'art concert paintings which had refined geometric shapes and strong contrasts. In 1950 Orup was awarded the Skane Art Association Scholarship and, in 1952, became new artistic director of Johansfors Glasbruk (a Swedish glass maker founded in 1891) in Smaland. Orup was artistic director there until 1968, when he was invited to serve as guest professor at the Royal College of Art in London. In 1969 he had a solo (glass) exhibition at the Greenwich Theatre Gallery. Orup 'retired' from glasswork in 1970 and returned to Domsten and painting. Bengt Orup exhibited extensively throughout his life and examples of his work can be found in Museums and collections throughout the world. The Museums and collections include Holland Art Association collections, Helsingborgs museum, Johansfors Crystal Museum, Kalmar museum, Landskrona Museum, L'Institut Tessin, Paris, Malmo Museum, Moderna Museet, Stockholm, Muse Curtius, Liège, Museum of Modern Art, New York, National museum, Stockholm, Per Ekström Museum, Öland, Skissernas Museum, Lund, Tomelilla Art Collection, Victoria and Albert Museum, London, Norrkoping Museum, Smaland Museum (Sweden's Museum of Glass), Ystad Art Museum.
